A week in Greece

At the end of last year I had one of the best trips of my life! My parents and I visited Greece, we spent a week in Athens and also visited Delphi and other small towns near it.

I believe that most of people pictures visiting Greece on summer, its islands and beautiful beaches, however, my experience there was quite different, I went to Greece in the end of November and beginning of December and in my opinion that is the best time to visit the city of Athens. Although most of the places close at 5pm in this time of the year, which is a really waste of potential, the temperature is still great and the sun shines until around 8pm.

With 19cº every day I spent in Greece and with the temperature being exactly the same at night I might say that for a city that makes you climb to the top of an acropolis is great to have this temperatures.

On my first days in Greece my dad was on work so my mom and I decided to go explore the places he had already visited when was there years ago. We went to the Syntagma Square, where later, already with my dad had the opportunity to watch the amazing "show" that is the changing of guards, and then to this huge street with shops that was amazing in that time of the year with its Christmas spirit.

On the second day we went to the most known place in Athens, the Acropolis, we climbed to the top of it and I may say it is a experience a person can't describe. If you like history you know how important for the civilization the Acropolis is and how much it means, how amazing it is that such important people once, in that exactly place made such important decisions. In the Acropolis you can see many important monuments like the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a old theater, the Parthenon, the old temple and many other important marks. Once you reach the top of the Acropolis and the Greek flag, I can only say that it feels like the top of the world. And yes, Athens isn't the most beautiful city in terms of skyline but it will still blow your mind to see it from the top of the Acropolis.

After the Acropolis we visited its museum with many things found over the years on archaeological explorations to the Acropolis.

Then on the next day, by recommendation of a Greek couple with which we had dinner the day before we went to Delphi, that is believed to be the centre of the world, because tells the legend that Zeus sent two doves around the world to meet in the centre of it and they met each other there, in Delphi. On our way to there we passed through this beautiful town known from its winter tourism, where people go skiing and enjoy the snow, Aráchova, we didn't see snow but sure it was the coldest place I was in Greece but also probably the most beautiful one, with the little shops, its Christmas lights and those beautiful houses, all in the middle of the mountains.

Once in Delphi we visited the Apollo's temple, an old stadium and other historical places, but if you go there and want to see the centre of the world be cautious about every indication and look for this relatively small stone in egg shape, that is the place that represents where the doves met, but not many people find it, including myself, that saw it but didn't even took a photo, and only found out what it was later. Also if you have the time go check the museum, something I didn't have time to do.

After Delphi we went to Galaxidi, a small town near the sea, great to have some contact with the Greek sea.

On the rest of the days we enjoyed Athens, visiting the Temple of Zeus and shopping for typical Greek stuff and souvenirs in the Plaka, a area known for its local shops. We also visited some ortodox churchs, beautiful and for me, a christian, with much more beautiful figures than ours, with Jesus pictured in a much more peaceful way.

The Greek food I tasted was great may I say, I fell in love with the Greek kebap and I have a really difficult taste in food.

To finish, the Greek people is incredibly nice and if you visit Greece you will certainly fall in love, it doesn't disappoint for sure!

PS: If you like cats, you will love how Athens has cats everywhere, even in the top of Acropolis, beautiful, well treated and friendly.
